Biggest Year Yet for KCOHL Charitable Giving! Even as we’ve faced challenges with the pandemic, the Key City Old Timers Hockey League continues to prove that we are more than just hockey. This year, through the generosity of our members, we made the largest donations in league history, totaling an incredible $18,750 to support local charities. Thanks to your unanimous vote to contribute the balance of our beer fund to charity, we were able to add $2,250 on top of our already generous contributions. This money is going directly to organizations that make a difference in our community. Our 2020 Charity Recipients: Cranbrook Food Bank Society: $5,000 Operation Street Angel: $5,000 East Kootenay Foundation for Health – Foundry: $5,000 Therapeutic Paws of Canada: $1,500 Chamber of Commerce Turkey Drive: $2,250 (beer funds) A huge thank you to Kevin D. for helping deliver these donations and ensuring they go where they are needed most. With so many people in our community facing hardships, your generosity could not have come at a better time. Let’s keep up this momentum and make next year even bigger! Scott S.

Spreading Holiday Cheer – Even Without Hockey As we navigate through another wave of challenges, I hope you and your families are staying safe. Normally at this time of year, we’d be gearing up for our annual Food Bank charity drive, but with the season on pause, we’ve had to rethink how we can continue giving back. As discussed at the AGM, we still want to make some substantial donations before the year ends, with the Food Bank being an obvious choice. One question remains—what should we do with the outstanding beer fund money sitting in the coolers? Given the circumstances, it seems logical to top up our league’s contributions and donate the funds to charity. Your Input Needed:We’re launching a short online survey to ensure everyone is on the same page. If the vote is unanimous, I will coordinate with the beer reps from each team to facilitate the transfer of funds. Within the next couple of weeks, the board will finalize this year’s charitable donations, ensuring they go where they’re needed most during the holiday season. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Wishing you and your families a safe and happy holiday season! Scott S.

Looking Ahead – A Season on Pause, But Not Forever We had a great turnout at the AGM last night, and while we all hoped for better news, the reality is that our 2020/21 season is postponed until at least the end of December. The City has provided updated guidelines, and due to restrictions on dressing room and shower use, combined with Via Sport’s Phase 3 protocols, we are unable to start the season as planned. We will reassess at the end of the year to see if we can make a shortened season happen. We know this isn’t what any of us wanted, but the health and safety of our players and community come first. That said, the KCOHL is not going anywhere, and when the time comes, we will be back on the ice stronger than ever! Giving Back Despite the Challenges One bright spot—due to last season’s abrupt end, we have some extra funds available to support local charities. As always, we want to ensure these funds go to causes that mean the most to our members. If you have a suggestion, reply with your thoughts and we’ll make a final decision at the December meeting. In the meantime, stay safe, stay positive, and know that we’ll be hitting the ice again soon! Scott S.

Staying Positive & Looking Forward Hello everyone! We hope you are all staying safe and healthy. As we approach what would have been our annual Charity Golf Tournament on May 23, we unfortunately must announce that it has been cancelled for this year. While this is disappointing, our priority remains supporting the health and well-being of our members and the community. We know these sacrifices are tough, but by doing our part now, we increase the chances of getting back on the ice this fall. Hockey will return, and so will our tournaments! We will continue to keep you updated as we get closer to the season. For those of you still holding on to your jerseys, hang on to them for now—we will coordinate their return in a safe and timely manner over the summer. To close, I leave you with the words of Dr. Bonnie Henry: “This is not forever. This is just for now. Let’s all be kind, be calm, and stay safe.” Scott S.

Rinks Closed – But Hockey Will Be Back As you may have already heard, the City has announced the closure of all arenas due to COVID-19. This means that our last regular season game and year-end tournament are now cancelled. While disappointing, we fully support the decision as Canada and the world work to stop the spread. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates regarding the May golf tournament as the date gets closer. For now, we ask that all players hold onto their jerseys and socks until we can coordinate their return. Your help in ensuring everything is collected for next season will be greatly appreciated. These are tough times, but our community and league are resilient. Let’s stay healthy, stay connected, and look forward to the moment we can get back to doing what we love. Scott S.
