The Rusty Skate – Jan 2025

President’s Message

Hello KCOHL players,

I hope you’re enjoying the season and still finding time to recover between games – it’s not easy going home and convincing your wife how unreal your hands are! 🏒

We’ve added games to the schedule on Sunday, February 23rd. Check the app and let us know if you’ll be lacing up or “resting for playoffs.” Speaking of updates, we’re planning for our Year-End Wrap-Up banquet, and your input is important! Scroll down and take the poll – it only takes a moment but helps us make it a night to remember.

Looking ahead, the year-end tournament is set for March 21st–23rd. It’s the highlight of the season – plenty of hockey, fundraising, laughs, and dazzling breakout passes… mostly to the wrong team. Let’s make it a weekend to remember.

Thank you for being part of this incredible league. Let’s keep up the laughs, the camaraderie, and remember – it’s all about good times, great hockey, and respect on the ice. See you at the rink!

Chris Nault
President, KCOHL

Upcoming Events

Super Bowl Sunday (Feb 9)

We know there’s a lot of guys that make Super Bowl a priority meaning that they’re not going to make their game on Sunday. Please let your teammates know right away if you’re going to be there or not so arrangements can be made for spares.

Year-End Tournament

đź“… March 21–23, Memorial Arena
The hockey event of the year! If you’re unsure about your availability, let your team rep know ASAP so we can organize players, spares, and jersey returns. Bring your best game – and maybe your lucky socks.

Year-End Wrap-Up Banquet

We’re excited to announce that our Year-End Wrap-Up Banquet will be held at the Cranbrook Golf Club, with the date to be confirmed.

Help us shape this event by taking a quick poll about your preferences for golf, dinner, and bringing a guest:
👉 Take the poll here!

We’re also on the lookout for sponsorsdonations, and prize packs to make this a memorable celebration. If you or your business are interested in contributing, reach out to the executive team at [email protected].

Additionally, we’ll soon send out another poll where you can nominate the organizations you feel the KCOHL should support and allocate donations to as part of the AGM. For those who don’t know, our league donates $15,000 – $20,000 annually to local causes. This is your chance to make an impact, let your voice be heard!

Volunteers Needed

Thank you to everyone who’s already stepped up or let their name stand to help with the year-end tournament and banquet! We’re still looking for more volunteers to assist with:

  • Organizing logistics
  • Event setup and teardown
  • Fundraising activities

If you’re interested in pitching in, reach out to the executive team, and we’ll find a role for you. Planning will ramp up in early February, so now’s the time to get involved – those who have already touched base, thanks, we will be in touch!

Chirps of the Month

  • Your skating’s smoother than a gravel road!
  • Your shot’s got less power than my grandma’s curling iron.
  • You’ve been out there all night and haven’t done a thing – are you charging by the hour?
  • You’re moving slower than dial-up internet.

Hockey Dad Joke

50 years ago, during the Stanley Cup playoffs, a goalie deflected the puck up and over the glass, unfortunately hitting a 10-year-old boy. While no permanent injuries were sustained, the goalie felt it was important to prevent possible PR disaster for the team and offered to take the child and his father to a restaurant of their choice. They agreed, and a few publications sent photographers to document the event. It was treated so solemnly that one reporter commented that this was surely a spiritual experience – with the father, son and goalie host.

Fun Fact

The longest NHL game ever was 176 minutes long, played in 1936. Imagine explaining that one to your spouse! “Sorry, honey, the game went a little over…”
